Revolution Reaches Palestinians, Then What?

As the wildfire of revolution and reform spreads through the Arab world, it jumps into the Palestinian territories and has leaders calling to get the long-stalled Palestinian elections back on track. The West Bank government announced over the weekend that a vote would take place by September. The thinking man’s first reaction to that is: Wait a minute. Remember what ... read more

Secular Anti-Government Forces in Jordan

“We don’t need a change in faces, we need a change in policies,” May Abu Ziat told me in the bitter cold if an Amman traffic circle as anti-government protesters demonstrated. The demonstration was aimed at King Abdullah II’s latest move to resolve the discontent that boiled up on the Arab street and in his capitol city. The King accepted the resignation ... read more

King Abdullah Fires His Cabinet Ahead of Demos

In the morning, Deputy Prime Minister Ayman Safadi told me that King Abdullah is very proactive about the reforms his citizens want. Before the sun set, Safadi confirmed he was out of a job. “I’m going to have a drink,” he said jokingly. As King Abdullah accepted the resignation of Prime Minister Samir Rifai, 31 cabinet ministers were fired. Safadi insisted ... read more

Giffords ‘Has no Right to Look This Good’

“She has no right to look this good and she does.” Those words from Dr. Michael Lemole, the neurosurgeon treating Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords.  He announced that doctors had turned off her ventilator. “She is breathing on her own,” He said. The ventilator tubes, however, have been left in place to prevent the possibility of pneumonia setting in. One of the ... read more

‘Thumbs Up’ from Giffords

A third night passes and the condition of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords didn’t change.  That doesn’t make for dramatic reporting, but it is exactly what her doctors were hoping for.  “In the next few days we want her to continue doing what she is doing, and even if we don’t come out here with glowing reports of progress, that’s good,” said neurosurgeon Dr. ... read more

Giffords’ Dr: All Indicators Showing Green

Swelling of the brain is the greatest threat to a victim of traumatic brain injury.  However, the nature of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords’ injury made her case unique. Chicago Firefighter Tragedy Update

In cold weather, Chicago Firefighters try to search every abandoned building that catches fire, because they assume homeless people will climb inside trying to survive the brutal Chicago winters. “We take no building as being vacant. We do it cautiously, but we search every one,” Said Fire Commissioner Robert Hoff.  Today, the building that burned on the south side ... read more

A spokesman for the Chicago Fire Department now confirms that two firefighters trapped by a collapse have died.   At 6:45am firefighters responded to a rather routine fire in an abandoned apartment building. The firefighters went into the building looking for homeless people who may have been seeking shelter from the cold. Shortly after 7am the roof came down, ... read more
