Bustin Balls, Golf Balls

I knew it would be interesting meeting someone who dives for golf balls. Glen Berger started his business, Bustinballs.com, about nine years ago. Five times a week, Berger puts on scuba gear, an oxygen tank, and a healthy dose of bravado. It’s time to dive. His routine includes a steady circuit of golf course lakes around Florida. The 6’8 Berger really does look ... read more

Farming Water in Florida

Jimmy Wohl’s been a cattle rancher for most of his life. His family bought the 5,000 acre spread in Sebring, Florida back in the early 1960’s, and it’s still a working cattle ranch today. While we were walking his land, A couple hundred head of beef cattle were looking at me like I was some sort of matador. Kind of like how many American ranchers have looked at any ... read more

Beware! Criminals Target Foreclosed Homes

Brooksville, Fla. --From the outside, the small one story home for sale in Brooksville, Florida looked like any other. Then we walked inside and noticed that thieves had stolen everything that wasn't tied down. Even things that were tied down had been taken: the fridge, the oven, the microwave. The kitchen sink and bathroom mirror were gone. The dishwasher and bathroom ... read more

World’s Largest Tractor Auction!

Davenport, Fla. - There's so much iron and metal that it's too much for the eye to take in all at once - actually it's impossible. We see front loaders, bulldozers, cherry pickers and dump-trucks. There are water trucks and sky-high cranes with arms that have been extended to look even bigger. They resemble the "daddy long leg" spiders I used to catch as a kid. The ... read more

At the Daytona 500

I can smell all kinds of things: hot dogs, burgers, deep fried fixin's that I know taste like heaven -- all of it bad for me. But most I smell racing fuel. I'm standing on a riser inside the winners circle at the Daytona international speedway. We are here for the 52nd running of what many call "the great American race." The scene in front of me is a sea of fans. ... read more

Can Churches Help Revive Jacksonville?

A couple of week back, I watched my camera crew move from spot to spot, inside the 'Historic Mount Zion AME" church in downtown Jacksonville, Fla. The choir sang and parishioners seemed to move in the spirit. I was tapping my feet to the sound of the old black hymn, 'God is good." Listening as the Reverend Frederick D. Richardson Jr. begins speaking. An older man, ... read more

Signs of Former Life Lining the Streets

Saturday January 23, 9 a.m. -- Our driver's name is Biondi, a large Haitian man with kids and a wife. He knows enough English to get us back and forth. He takes us in his Toyota mini van, zooming around packs of slow moving people. a man on a mission to get us to our morning "liveshot" location in time. We've labeled his transport "the hell van," because riding with ... read more

Witness to a Young Girl’s Final Moments

Its 11:10 Friday morning and the coordinated chaos has begun here in Port-au-Prince. I'm standing over our engineer mark, behind me in a corner is my photographer, Steve. We are packed inside the University of Miami'ss Medical Center's HUGE triage tent, just outside the airport here in Port-au-Prince. This makeshift hospital takes up about 25,000 square feet. It's ... read more

Jamaican Officer Comandeers 2 U.N. Trucks

UPDATE: 10:45 a.m. Thursday It doesn't feel right. Watching planeloads of search and rescue teams, and lines of humanitarian workers lining up at the international airport. Not to come in - but to leave. Simultaneously, there are fresh teams arriving, but I'm told not as many as before. This morning, just about a minute before my 8 a.m. "Liveshot," I spoke ... read more

Miracles Can Happen (While Reporting)

Today,  I need to give a big "thanks" to the Sri Lankan contingent of the UN multi-national peacekeeping force We spent about an hour following  two UN trucks as they maneuvered through some very hilly terrain, about 10 miles from the Haitian international airport Bumps, jolts and some very tight and ugly turns. We were tailing the truck, only about 16 inches ... read more
