Jacob Zuma’s Child #20 And Other Adventures

You might have read this week about South African President Jacob Zuma having fathered his 20th child. Perhaps it came as no surprise; the difference between 19 and 20 is not all that great. The shock surrounding the most recent birth was not that Zuma has one more child, but that the mother is not one of his wives. In fact, she’s the daughter of a close friend of ... read more

Burqa Ban: Italy Has A Law Of Sorts Already

Italy could beat France to a burqa ban, although members of the ruling center-right coalition were divided over whether it would be a wise decision. Early this week, a parliamentary panel in France recommended limiting the use of the full veil, although the recommendation has not been debated by parliament or become law yet. Pope John Paul: Ready For Resignation, Whip

Pope John Paul II not only practiced severe bodily penance – including whipping himself with a belt and sleeping on the floor– but also wrote a letter in which he offered his resignation in the case he was incapacitated. The revelations were made in an Italian book just published by the promoter of John Paul’s sainthood process, Msgr. Slawomir Oder. The reports ... read more

Italian Official Trashes Haiti Relief Job

The head of Italy’s disaster-response department has trashed U.S.-led relief efforts in Haiti, calling them “pathetic” and saying people were more interested in getting on television than helping out the needy. Synagogue Sunday: Pope Goes To The Ghetto

When Pope Benedict goes to the Rome synagogue on Sunday he’ll be making history. It has been nearly 25 years since Pope John Paul made his visit there – the first pope to do so in the modern era. Would-Be Plane Bomber: Check Out The ‘Hood

Today I visited the neighborhood in the Nigerian capital of Abuja where the family of Christmas Day bombing suspect Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab has one of their three homes. It looked something like an upscale neighborhood in the United States, with a couple of extra details: barbed wire on top of the walls, and a few chickens running around in the street. By African ... read more

Air Travel: Time To Get Used To Body Scans

Not a lot of people get a big kick out of parading in front of total strangers with their clothes off, but anyone who travels by air might want to get used to it. After Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab nearly brought down a plane headed from Amsterdam to Detroit, security has already changed. It began in Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport with all passengers on flights bound for the ... read more

Hope For Amanda: Rudy Gets Sentence Reduced

Rudy Guede, the Ivory Coast native who was convicted of the same murder and sexual assault as Amanda Knox, had his sentence nearly cut in half on appeal Tuesday, from 30 years in prison to 16. Guede had been tried separately from Knox and her former boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito, because he had opted for a  fast-track trial. Tuesday’s decision certainly bodes well ... read more

Blessed John Paul II? Book Your Hotel Now

Progress on Pope John Paul II’s path to sainthood is expected to come on Saturday when Benedict 16th approves what are known as the “heroic virtues” of the late pope, officially giving him the title of “Venerable.” While the Vatican has not made any official announcement of the move, sources have revealed that in November, the cardinals and bishops who are ... read more
