Southern Oregon Hit by Tsunami
March 11, 2011 - 11:38 AM | by: Dan SpringerSeveral small towns in southern Oregon are now seeing the tsunami triggered by a massive earthquake in Japan. Emergency management officials say Port Orford is experiencing waves 4 1/2 feet high and their expecting the waves to crest at close to 7 1/2 feet by 9 am PST. So far no damage or injuries have been reported.
Tsunami warning sirens sounded at 4 am and most residents sought higher ground. Curry County has 22,000 residents and most live near the coast. Police and fire personnel went door to door asking people to go inland.
Don Kendall, Curry County’s Emergency Services coordinator, says during the winter the coastal towns often see 20 foot high waves, but they are very different from a tsunami wave which is wider and stays onshore longer.
