Weary New England Gets Rain, Sleet, Ice

February 2, 2011 - 10:23 AM | by: Molly Line

A heavy rain is falling in Boston. New England roads are coated with slop today as a second wave of wintery weather hits the region dumping a mix of ice, rain and sleet. Schools across Massachusetts canceled classes as cities and towns struggle to move yesterday’s accumulation of 6 to 10 inches. Officials fear today’s nasty, wet weather will soak into the existing snow pack, causing roofs to collapse and trees to fall, knocking out power in a region already weary of digging out.

The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency is gearing up to handle possible search and rescue situations that arise in the event of a building collapse, calling in an urban search and rescue team.

Governor Deval Patrick directed all non-emergency state employees to stay home today.

Boston’s Logan Airport is open but flight cancellations and delays are rampant. Hopeful passengers are urged to check with their airlines before heading to the airport.

South and West of New England a wintery mix is snarling traffic and travel plans. Amtrak is reporting extensive delays on the New York to Philadelphia route.

North of Boston in Vermont and New Hampshire heavy snow is still falling. White out conditions are being reported.
