The Coup That Didn’t Happen
January 25, 2011 - 9:08 AM | by: Leland VittertSo far the Lebanon “crisis” has been the story of what hasn’t happened rather that what has. No mass protests. No fighting in the street. No coup by Hezbollah. The world waited for violence to break out after the Shiite group Hezbollah left the unity government kicking Prime Minister Saad Hariri out. The violence never came and today Hezbollah announced they would back billionaire Najib Mikati for the Prime Minister’s job. The announcement came on a “day of rage” that Hariri supporters planned to protest; the protests continued Tuesday but seemed rather anticlimactic after Hariri spoke urging non-violence and a continuation of democratic ideals. If Mikati can form a government, Lebanon will slip one step closer to becoming an Iranian proxy on the Mediterranean and Hezbollah will have pulled off a political coup without ever firing a single shot. Of course, this brings up the question of the American funded and well armed Lebanese army. With Mikati as Prime Minister tenure contingent on a continued blessing from Iranian backed Hezbollah there will be a new power dynamic on Israel’s northern border and one must wonder how long it will continue to be the story of what hasn’t happened.
