Whopper of Snow Storm in New England

January 12, 2011 - 9:23 AM | by: Molly Line

A whopper of a snow storm is slamming New England today.

Up to a foot of snow is expected in Boston and surrounding areas. To the north and west of the city communities are preparing for up to 18 inches. Crews and plows are already working to keep up with the heavy snowfall that is blanketing roadways. The morning commute was snarled by accidents though many companies urged employees to work from home.

Schools across the region are closed today and Logan Airport has cancelled flights. Airport officials say crews are working to keep a runway clear with hopes of getting flights back on track later this afternoon and evening as the snow storm lightens and moves out.

65,000 people are without power,  many on the south shore of Massachusetts where heavy wet snow and powerful winds are pummeling communities near Plymouth.
