These Joints Are Jumping!

December 31, 2010 - 11:50 AM | by: Claudia Cowan

Across the country, trampoline centers are inviting kids of all ages to defy gravity, play air dodgeball, sky surf, and work up a smile-infused sweat.

There are more than 25 trampoline centers in the U.S., and one of the most popular is in San Francisco’s Presidio, where an historic airplane hangar has been converted into The House Of Air. Adults line up early for the trampoline aerobics classes. Parents like Heather Soicher are thrilled to watch her kids have such a ball jumping around. “They really have a great time, it’s great exercise, and they’re exhausted after an hour,” she says.

From Florida to Arizona, California, and beyond, customers aren’t the only ones bouncing for joy. Along with offering fun and fitness, these jumping joints are providing jobs. Employees like Abrahm Esnley says he lucked out landing a job at the House of Air. “I saw the ad on Craig’s List, and I was like, I love trampolines, and thought this would be a cool job.”

More than 800,000 people have bounced through the Sky Zone since it opened in Las Vegas, providing 64 trampolines, and 20 jobs.  In fact, these indoor thrill parks are employing hundreds of people, from the designers and builders, to the so-called “flight staff” who check people in, hand out the special shoes and wristbands, and keep an eye on air-heads. “We supervise, make sure no one’s hurt, kind of teach people moves, you know, show ‘em little tricks,” says Ensley.

House of Air owner Dave Schaeffer plans to hire half a dozen more people to keep up with demand. On-line reservations sell out every weekend, and most nights. “We are open a little over 80 hours a week, we have 35 for sure part time staff members we’re looking for more. We have 5 or 6 full time staff members we’re looking for more, so alot of jobs in this one location,” says Shaeffer.

He’s working on a second House of Air location, and a dozen more trampoline parks are set to open next year across the country, providing jobs, and a bounce in the economy.
