Chicago Firefighter TragedyDecember 22, 2010 - 12:58 PM | by: Mike Tobin
A spokesman for the Chicago Fire Department now confirms that two firefighters trapped by a collapse have died.
At 6:45am firefighters responded to a rather routine fire in an abandoned apartment building. The firefighters went into the building looking for homeless people who may have been seeking shelter from the cold. Shortly after 7am the roof came down, taking what appears to be most of the buildign with it. A mayday was called and the fire was raised to two then 3 alarms. 14 firefighters were injured. The condition of six of them is reported as critical. The Chicago tribune, quoting radio traffic, said one of the firefighters died when he was taken to Northwestern hospital, they report another died at Christ medical center in Oak Lawn.
This happened on the 100th anniversary of the Chicago Stockyards fire. 21 firefighters and 3 civilians were killed in that tragedy. It was the greatest single loss of firemen until the attacks of September 11. Casualties in that disaster were also caused by a collapse.
