Too Much Sympathy For ‘Celebrity’ Amanda Knox?
December 3, 2010 - 8:11 AM | by: Greg BurkeAmanda Knox’s murder trial became a major media battle as her family tried to portray the Seattle student as a fun-loving normal kid wouldn’t want to hurt anyone.
That’s understandable, and Amanda’s parents and p.r. people have been pretty effective in getting her a lot of favorable publicity.
Nevertheless, Amanda was found guilty of murder after her trial a year ago and sentenced to 26 years in prison. Her appeal is now underway in Perugia, Italy, where the murder took place.
The U.S. networks, perhaps anxious for a post-prison interview, seem to be sitting squarely in the Amanda-Is-Innocent camp.
Enter John Kercher, the father of the victim, Meredith Kercher. While the Kercher family members have been admirable in maintaining their dignity and reserve throughout a very trying period in their lives, Meredith’s father has had enough.
“Since that act of horrific violence, Knox, it seems, has been accorded the status of a minor celebrity,” John Kercher wrote in the Daily Mail.
He complained that Amanda exerts such a hold over the media, but said he understands it. “Knox is young, attractive and female,” he wrote. “To many she seems like an unlikely killer.”
Yet Kercher said he and his family believe Amanda is guilty without a doubt, “unequivocally culpable” in his words.
“As far as we are concerned, she has been convicted of taking our precious Meredith’s life in the most hideous and bloody way,” he wrote.
Kercher said that Amanda’s parents have never expressed any sign of condolence to his family. “There has been no letter of sympathy; no word of regret,” Kercher noted. “Instead, I have watched them repeatedly reiterate the mantra of their daughter’s innocence.”
