Electrifying Auto Show

November 19, 2010 - 2:28 PM | by: Adam Housley

Just past the electric blue first Porsche ever purchased in the U.S. sits not a display of the new 911, or even the latest Turbo, but the Cayenne Hybrid and a fuel efficient Porsche race car to match. Welcome to the car show 2010 style and from the look of things, someone is going to need to add some wall power in the years to come.

While Detroit is still number one for cars here stateside, the Los Angeles show is quickly becoming a player. Not only because California is of course known for the ‘car culture’, but also because the southland has become the number one market for hybrid sales in the country. We have seen this evolution ourselves over the course of the last three years as concepts have become reality here at the LA Convention Center. Even the luxury and exotic makers are producing their fuel efficient versions and the Porsche SUV hybrid proves that.

It really doesn’t seem like that long ago that fuel efficient concepts were the only option….as I look at the Chevy Volt for example. The Volt concept was different when I first saw it here, but the final product looks pretty darn good and those who already have one, rave about it. Not far away, the Nissan Leaf is on display and it will be in showrooms very soon; while the Volt is already there. Both are meeting the need if you talk to the car folks here at the show and it seems like that’s what Americans are looking for….a need to get away from dependence on foreign fuel, save some cash on gas and help the environment; pick your reason.

Besides saving fuel, throughout the halls here in downtown Los Angeles there are a number of cars that catch my eye. Sure I am here to see the latest versions of gas savers, but muscle cars are also on display. The new convertible Camaro glistens and draws a pretty large crowd of onlookers, while exotics like the Morgan or Astin Martin flash with constant photos. For any car buff, LA is becoming a major player on the auto show circuit and I even see some badges from Hollywood studios. Will some of these cars be in the next big flick orr popular TV show?? You can bet your hybrid on it!
