Will Israel Accept America’s Offer?
November 15, 2010 - 12:36 PM | by: Reena NinanIsraeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is trying to convince his right-wing coalition to support a 90-day settlement construction freeze in exchange for security incentives.
The Israeli security cabinet would have to give final approval. A vote could come as early as Wednesday.
According to sources familiar with the negotiations, the U.S would provide Israel with 20 F-35 fighter jets in exchange for a construction freeze. Israel was already planning to purchase the jets, but the U.S. has now agreed to provide them free of charge. A $3 billion gift that Israeli tax payers won’t have to finance.
A member of Netanyahu’s Likud party tells Fox News, “This is the beginning of the end of his current government.” Opponents of the deal believe Israel will eventually be forced to discuss borders and core issues that would lead to a Palestinian state.
As part of the 90-day freeze, Israel would suspend any building in the West Bank, but East Jerusalem construction would still be permitted. In addition, the U.S. has agreed to veto any unilateral moves to recognizes a Palestinian state in the UN Security Council.
