Is Lebanon Headed for a Civil War?
November 12, 2010 - 12:57 PM | by: Reena NinanIt’s been almost five years since former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri was assassinated in Beirut in Feb 2005. He was murdered when a 1,000 pound explosive- laden car bomb exploded. Twenty-two others were also killed in the explosions.
The buzz around Lebanon is that the Iranian-backed militant group Hezbollah is likely to be indicted for the murder.
In a fiery speech last night Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah said if his organization is fingered he promised to bring chaos and civil war to Beirut, “Any hand that will touch any of them (Hezbollah members) will be cut off,” he said. “They must know that very well.”
Secretary of State Clinton has warned Syria not to arm Hezbullah, adding that Hezbullah’s threats of violence will not stop the work of the tribunal. But no matter who is indicted, Lebanon is quickly falling into Iranian hands.
Indictments are expected to be issued at the end of this year or early next year.
