President Carter Says Palestinians Live in a ‘Cage’
October 20, 2010 - 11:52 AM | by: Reena NinanFormer U.S. President Jimmy Carter, 86, has spent the past week in the Middle East, along with a delegation of peace activists known as The Elders, which is led by former Irish President Mary Robinson and former U.N. Envoy Lakhdar Brahimi.
Carter continued to publicly call on Israel to lift the international blockade on the Gaza Strip’s 1.5 million Palestinians.
On Tuesday, while in Syria, he said that Palestinians were “living in a cage” in Gaza.
In addition to Gaza, peace talks were the focus of his visit. The Elders say that based on conversations with regional players in the Mideast, there are “very low expectations” that U.S.-backed talks between Israel and the Palestinians will go anywhere.
Tomorrow Carter will meet with Knesset Speaker Reuven Rivlin. He is later expected to meet Israeli Deputy Prime Minister Dan Meridor.
Yesterday he met with Syrian President Bashar Assad and leaders of Hamas in Syria.
