Search for Jet Skier’s Body

October 6, 2010 - 6:33 PM | by: Maggie Kerkman

Mexican and U.S. authorities continue to search for the body of David Hartley, a 30-year old jet skier presumed dead, allegedly shot by thugs who chased after Hartley and his wife. Tiffany Hartley says last week, she and her husband went jet skiing on Falcon Lake, a huge lake in South Texas that straddles the U.S. border with Mexico. The couple checked out ruins of a mission on the Mexican side of the lake and was headed back when Hartley says she and her husband were ambushed by men in three boats. The men carried guns. Hartley says they shot at the couple, killing her husband. Hartley escaped back to the U.S. side of the lake and told authorities what happened. No sign of David Hartley or his jet ski have been seen since. One witness has come forward to confirm they saw someone on a jet ski being chased.

Some Mexican authorities have called into question Hartley’s account. But whether you have questions about the story or not, it’s clear that this was not the first violent incident on the international lake. There were at least four other attacks on the Mexican side of Lake Falcon where fishermen were robbed or in some chases chased. Up to last week, no one had been hurt. As a result of the attacks, U.S. fishermen and pleasure boaters have received repeated warnings not to venture to the Mexican side of the lake.

The incident has, once again, pointed a spotlight again on border security. How secure can our border be if armed men in boats can venture across an imaginary line in a lake? The lake is in a rural Texas area with too few boats to patrol a wide expanse of space.

David Hartley’s family and friends held a memorial service for him last night. They showed pictures and shared memories of the man they knew and loved. They assured each other that Hartley is in a better place now. What is less sure is whether they will ever be able to bring his body home.
