State Parks Get Corporate Bailout

September 25, 2010 - 2:07 PM | by: Peter Doocy

America’s state parks get 727 million visits every year. A full forty percent of Americans have visited a state park in the last year alone. And all those people have been victims of budget cuts to our beautiful preserves. Until now.

Corporate sponsors are stepping up to bail out the state parks. There are no plans to re-name any parks, but companies like Coke, Verizon, and Nestle Juicy Juice are putting their names on various trails and campsites in several states nationwide. While their contributions aren’t enough to fully operate the parks, they are enough to keep the parks clean and staffed. “Parks are fighting just to keep open, to keep staffed, to keep restrooms clean,” says Shari Boyer, the CEO of Government Solutions Group, who co-ordinates corporate sponsorships. “They’re not going to pay the bills- the general bills- but they will help to keep visitor services going and improve programs that really affect people who show up to see the parks during the day.”

Apparel company The North Face has an agreement with some parks in Virginia. The North Face pays to have some trail maps adorned with their logo, which allows them to give something back to the community- and achieve some very specifically targeted advertising. The people on those trails, are the people they want in their stores. Brook Shinsky from The North Face says, “this is a really good representation of the public and private sector working together to fill a need.”

Many closely associated with the parks can attest to how badly the need is, to keep our parks operational. “This is where you get therapy for physical anad mental ailments,” says Virginia State Parks Director Joe Elton. “I heard last week that five minutes in nature represents one prozac. Now, I’ve never taken a prozac-but I know what it’s supposed to do- and if five minutes in nature accomplishes the same thing, my recommendation is: let’s write a prescription for five minutes in nature.”
