Tensions Mount in Jerusalem
September 22, 2010 - 11:47 AM | by: Reena NinanShattered glass and rocks now line the streets outside Jerusalem’s Old City. Israeli police remain in full riot gear prepared to dispense tear gas and water canon machines.
Police are on high alert after an Israeli security guard killed a Palestinian father of five in the east Jerusalem neighborhood of Silwan which is predominantly Palestinians but also the site of a small Jewish enclave.
Angry Palestinians threw rocks and set two cars on fire. Eleven Palestinians and eight Israelis have been injured in the clashes.
Shortly after evening prayers, Israeli police entered the Temple Mount where they say Palestinian youth were throwing stones.
“A few of the youth were arrested,” said Micky Rosenfeld Jerusalem Police spokesman. ” It’s hard to tell what to expect in the coming days.”
The clashes between Palestinian youth Israeli police have spread to other east Jerusalem neighborhoods like Ras al-Amud.
Palestinians say they are worried Israel is trying to undermine U.S. sponsored direct peace talks.
