Missing VT Woman Believed to be Abducted

September 16, 2010 - 10:53 AM | by: Molly Line

Vermont investigators believe an elderly Sheffield woman who has not been seen since Friday was likely abducted, shocking the quiet community she’s called home for nearly a decade.

At a press conference yesterday State Police Major Edward Ledo made clear investigators believe foul play may have played a role in the disappearance of 78-year-old Pat O’Hagan.

“I will not get into the details as to why we came to the conclusion that she left her residence against her will, but all indicators point in this direction,” Ledo told reporters.

Based on the police investigation and the fact that O’Hagan was very physically active and mentally sound, police say they do not believe she wandered off on her own, as is often a theory touted when the elderly go missing.

FBI agents from the Burlington, Vermont area have joined the investigation and searches are being conducted throughout the woods and surrounding farm lands. Abandoned vehicles and buildings are being scoured. An aerial search is underway today.

While investigators say they believe the incident is isolated they are increasing patrols and reminding citizens to take precautions. They’re telling residents in the area to lock homes and vehicles and report any suspicious activity to State Police.

State Police have offered a reward of $5,000 for help solving O’Hagan’s disappearance.
