8 People Missing in Colorado Fire

September 8, 2010 - 12:50 PM | by: Alicia Acuna

The families of eight people who did not evacuate during the mandatory order are working with authorities to locate their loved ones.  Today, Incident Commander Rick Brough, with the Boulder County Sheriff’s office announced that initially 20 residents were unaccounted for, but 12 have been located and eight are still missing.

Approximately 3,500 people were evacuated after the Four Mile Canyon fire began on Monday morning.  The flames moved quickly through two adjoining canyons and so far have consumed 136 homes and and close to  6200 acres, which is less than firefighters estimate of 7100 acres yesterday.

The wildfire, according to authorities is at zero percent containment.  In fact, during the morning briefing, Public Information Officer Laura McConnell said that “Right now we’re not looking at containment or control of the fire,” that they are still doing what’s called structure and “point protection”.

McConnell said that a fire behavioral analyst who is helping map the blaze for firefighters on the lines, says that this fire is, “misbehaving” and not behaving the way typical wildfires do this time of year.  “It is erratic”, McConnell told Fox News, “It is like a small toddler; you have to keep an eye on it, be flexible and depending on what’s feeding it, it’s attitude and behavior can change.”

Right now, the fire in Boulder County has the highest priority nationwide.  That means resources are pouring in from around the country, including seven heavy tankers.

Fox News will have more coverage of the fire burning out of control in Colorado.
