Hurricane Earl Deals OBX a Glancing Blow
September 3, 2010 - 9:15 AM | by: Jonathan SerrieGusty winds and heavy rains continue to sweep across North Carolina’s Outer Banks. But daybreak has allowed utility crews, local authorities and the media to get the first glimpse of damage from Earl.
The eye of the storm stayed at least 85 miles offshore, sparing these small barrier island communities the Category 2 hurricane force winds some had feared. However, strong tropical storm force winds ripped shingles from roofs and tore aluminum siding off of some homes and businesses.
The heavy rain continues to cause minor flooding along some portions of Highway 12. So far, there are no reports of any significant power outages.
Strong winds continue to drive a pounding surf along the Atlantic shores of the Outer Banks.
