Another Re-Run or The Real Thing?

September 1, 2010 - 9:25 AM | by: Yonat Friling

PM Netanyahu climbed the stairs of the Boeing 767 with a song in his heart.

Let’s imagine it was “I Gotta Feeling”. That’s what we all thought when we saw him, and when we talked with him on the plane on the way to yet another launch of peace talks. He seemed to be in his words – “cautious and optimistic”, hoping that this time, the Israeli government will be perceived as the willing partner.

The journalist on the plane have heard Israeli officials calling this round a promising round, where there are only a few “road bumps” according to an Israeli Official. That could, and would, be resolved within a year. The PM was in such a good mood, that he caught up with his favorite TV series “Desperate Housewives.”

But then, the news about the deadly attack in the West Bank broke. The atmosphere quickly changed. And the PM was soon on the phone with the heads of the Israeli security branches. “ My heart goes to the families and loved ones,” he said in a statement. “Acts of terror will not influence Israel’s position on borders and the faith of the settlements,” he added, making sure the Palestinian partner he will soon meet, will understand his firm positions.

Today U.S. President Barack Obama will meet separately with the leaders, starting with PM Netanyahu then Abbas, and then with accompanying Arab Leaders President Mubarak and King Abdullah. All partners will probably hope that this time, it will be different, not just a feeling, and not another re-run of previous peace talks.
