Volunteers Still Helping 5 Years Later
August 29, 2010 - 3:06 PM | by: David LewkowictA group from Canada will be the last to volunteer for Mission on the Bay, a charity building homes on the Mississippi coast. As funding priorities shift to more recent disasters, MOB is forced to close its doors. With many unfinished projects, plenty of people still in need and volunteers still wanting to provide assistance, the group is struggling with the decision.
“Unfortunately, there’s still a lot of people that we have coming in still — even yesterday — looking for help, needing help with their homes. We have a whole lot of cases that are just left kind of open ended,” said Lidsay Asker. “We were hoping that we were gonna be able to stay with a small closeout crew to kind of finish up some of the projects that we had started and are gonna have to leave half-way finished. But unfortunately, we’re not gonna be able to do that.”
The Canadian teens are part of the group Youth for Christ. The teens traveled from Ontario, Canada as part of a service mission. Supervised by MOB staff members with construction experience, the kids worked in the Mississippi heat to build a new home where Katrina’s destructive force left its mark five years ago.
