WASHINGTON D.C. — Almost one year after Maj. Nidal Hasan allegedly shot and killed 13 people at Fort Hood Army Base in Texas, the Pentagon released its final report on the steps it will take to prevent internal attacks from happening again.

It’s one of two reports that addresses recommendations from an independent review panel put in place shortly after the November, 2009 shooting. In a memo attached to the report, Defense Secretary Robert Gates says a majority of the recommendations will be implemented.

“These initiatives will significantly improve the Department’s ability to mitigate internal threats, ensure force protection, enable emergency response, and provide care for victims and families,” Gates wrote. He highlighted the following areas for improvement:

- Addressing workplace violence;

- Ensuring commander and supervisor access to appropriate information in personnel records;

- Improving sharing with partner agencies and among installations;

- Expanding installations’ emergency response capabilities;

- Integrating force protection policy, and clarifying force protection roles and responsibilities and;

- Ensuring that we provide top quality health care to both our service members and our healthcare providers.

Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan was a career soldier and Army psychiatrist, allegedly upset with the wars and his upcoming deployment to Afghanistan. Authorities say he entered Fort Hood on November 5, 2009 and killed 13 of his peers in cold blood, injuring dozens more. In the aftermath, ties surfaced to radical Yemeni cleric, Anwar al-Awlaki, and Hasan’s actions have been described as a terrorist attack by at least one member of the Obama administration.

Minutes after the shooting began, Hasan was subdued by a shot to the spine from a member of the military police at Fort Hood. He’s currently being held at the Bell Country Jail in Texas where he faces numerous charges, including 13 counts of premeditated murder. He’s paralyzed from the chest down.
