Crime
Fire / Gun Battle Outside TX Police Station
August 17, 2010 - 1:29 PM | by: Maggie KerkmanUpdate: We now know who the suspect is. McKinney police say he’s 29-year old Patrick Gray Sharp. He has no criminal record. Sharp took classes at Collin College in 2004, but police say he had no grudge they can find against the school– or against police for that matter. Officers at Sharp’s home found a cache of weapons. Police say Sharp shot more than 100 rounds after setting fire to his pickup to lure people outside. The whole incident took less than five minutes. Says Chief Doug Kowalski: “I think this was a clear case of suicide by cop. I do not know why.”

What was first reported as shots fired at a college campus has evolved into something even more disturbing. Police in McKinney, Texas say this morning, someone drove up and parked a pickup in front of their safety building—which is right across the street from the Central Park campus of Collin County Community College. The truck caught fire. Police say there was ammunition in the truck that began to explode when the flames reached the ammo. Officers poured out of the building to investigate and came under fire. A suspect was found dead near a tree line near the building. It’s not known whether officers killed the suspect or he killed himself. It’s also not known exactly how many shots were fired. Police are still trying to figure out what might have sparked the shooting. They say they think they know the suspect’s name but aren’t releasing it just yet. The alleged shooter had apparently been seen yelling something in the direction of the police station.
Since the shooting happened so close to the college campus, the campus was put on lockdown. Classes don’t start till next week but there were still students and staffers there. The lockdown has since been lifted and no one besides the suspected shooter was hurt. McKinney Police intend to hold another press conference at 5pm EST to tell us more. McKinney is a suburb of Dallas.
