Serial Stabbing Suspect Faces Extradition

August 13, 2010 - 1:45 PM | by: Jonathan Serrie

Update: 1:45

Elias Abuelazam will return to Flint, Michigan as planned. After meeting with his attorney, Abuelazam declined a second extradition hearing, originally scheduled for 1:15 PM in Atlanta, where he was arrested earlier this week.

Instead, the judge announced that the serial stabbing suspect would stick to his initial decision to waive extradition. Michigan authorities have ten days to transport Abuelazam back to their state to face charges in connection with a series of stabbing attacks.

Update: 12:15 PM

Even after waiving extradition, it remains unclear just how soon Elias Abuelazam will return to Flint, Michigan where he’s suspected in a series of stabbing incidents.

Shortly after an 11 AM extradition hearing in Atlanta, a spokesman for Fulton County Superior Court announced that Abuelazam’s attorney had arrived in town and requested a meeting with his client.

A new hearing has been scheduled for 1:15 PM, at which time Judge Richard Hicks will ask the attorney whether he wishes to change his client’s response to the request from Michigan authorities to have Abuelazam transported back to Flint immediately.

Update: 11:35 AM

The suspect in a series of stabbing incidents will be heading to Flint, Michigan to face trial. Elias Abuelazam agreed to return to Michigan without requiring that state’s governor to initiate a formal extradition process, which could have taken up to three months.

Initially, Abuelazam told a Fulton County, Georgia judge that he did not want to return to Michigan so that he could face trial in Atlanta, where he was arrested Wednesday while awaiting a flight to Tel Aviv, Israel. But the judge explained that because his alleged crimes occurred in Michigan, a Georgia trial was not an option and that he would have to wait in the Fulton County Jail for as long as three months pending extradition.

It was then that Abuelazan agreed to waive extradition and return to Michigan immediately. John Potbury, a spokesman for Genesse County, Michigan Prosecutor David Leyton says his office has ten days to transport the suspect back to Michigan and it will attempt to move as fast as possible.

Abuelazan also indicated he planned to fight the charges pending against him in Michigan.

An 11 AM extradition hearing has been scheduled for a serial stabbing suspect being held in Atlanta.

Authorities in Flint, Michigan are seeking to bring 33-year-old Elias Abuelazam back to their state to face charges in connection with a series of stabbing incidents. Investigators say Abuelazam also faces likely charges in connection with stabbing attacks in Leesburg, Virginia and possibly one in Toledo, Ohio.

Abuelazam is an Israeli citizen who has been living in the U.S. as a legal resident alien. Authorities arrested him in Atlanta Wednesday night, just minutes before he was to board a flight bound for Tel Aviv.
