The Colosseum: Your Ad Could Be Right Here

July 29, 2010 - 10:01 AM | by: Greg Burke

A building that’s nearly 2,000 years old can face a lot of wear and tear over the centuries, so it should come as no surprise that the Colosseum in Rome needs some major restoration work.

But the Italian government is hurting for cash, so it’s hoping that private sponsors will step up to the plate, so to speak, to the tune of more than $30 million to help out with the work.

Sponsorhip, of course, means advertising. In this case, it means linking your name to one of the most famous and most visited monuments in the world.

And while the Colosseum may be one of the world’s first superdomes (it originally had a canvas top that could be put on to protect spectators from sun and rain), officials said they have no desire to turn it into an American-style ballpark.

The Ministry of Culture says advertising will have to be “compatible with the value and decorum of the Colosseum.” In other words, no big neon lights over the left field wall (if there a left field wall in something shaped like an egg) saying EAT AT GIUSEPPE’S!

“We have a little different aesthetic sense than you do in the United States,” a ministry spokesman told FOXNews.com. However, details are not expected to be released until next week about how the advertising will work, where the names will go, and how big they’ll be.

But for $30 million, companies are going to want their names in bright lights somewhere.

"Welcome to ABC Monday Night Gladiator Games, coming live from newly renovated "Conoco Colosseum" in beautiful Downtown Rome" Tonight's Ceremonial first lion will be released by Titus II, and is brought to you by Chrysler Chariots...the official supplier of Chariots for all the games here at this beautifully renovated Colosseum"

Vespasian financed the Colosseum by accepting donatinos from rich families. Their reward was to have their names engraved in stone on the Colosseum. Some of these names can still be seen on the exterior of the Colosseum. What is old is now new again.

I've been to the REAL Colosseum in Italy. I did not know that it had a canvas top in the old days.

Carve sponsor names and logos in Carrara marble and place them in strategic locations. That should be enough... Win-win.

I was at the colosseum last week. With all the graffiti through out Rome, why would anyone want to change the clean look of an historical site?

“We have a little different aesthetic sense than you do in the United States” Huh? I don't think I've seen any big neon signs at our national historic places either. Italy's FIFA soccer fields look just like our ballparks, stadiums and arenas. In contrast, places like the Washington monument, Independence Hall, Arlington cemetery and the Grand Canyon don't have any ads on premises unless it's a company that provides a service, and even then its limited to a company logo and slogan on a product they provide.

Italy should ask all especially all here in the U.S. who have, major $$$$,sponsor the restoration of the colosseum, and put the names of all who ruled here and still do, in NEON, Miami/Nova York/Nova Jersey/ Nova Nevada/Nova Chicago/ Nova California, where-ever!
