Missing Sailor’s Body Found in Afghanistan
July 27, 2010 - 7:41 AM | by: Conor PowellKABUL- The body of one of the two U.S. sailors missing in Afghanistan has been found, according to U.S. officials.
A NATO press release said that the body was discovered in Eastern Afghanistan Sunday.
U.S. officials vowed to continue searching for the other missing sailor. A Taliban spokesman claims insurgents have captured the other sailor – whom U.S. officials have not identified.
According to the Associated Press, the Navy sailor killed was Justin McNealy, 30.
Jim Kerr, a legislator from Littleton, Colorado told The Denver Post that McNealy was his nephew. According to Kerr, McNealy, a non-commissioned officer and father of two, was due to return home to the US in August.
The two sailors went missing Friday. They were last seen leaving a U.S. military base in Kabul in an armored vehicle. Afghan officials say their vehicle was later spotted 80 miles south of Kabul in Logar Province, where insurgents reportedly attacked it.
Over the weekend, NATO launched an extensive search for the two sailors – setting up checkpoints around Logar and distributing thousands of fliers with pictures of the two missing sailors.
In a statement, NATO said it “holds the captors accountable for the safety and proper treatment of our missing service member.”
The only other American service member in Taliban captivity is Spc. Bowe Bergdahl of Idaho who disappeared June 30, 2009 in Eastern Afghanistan.
