World Cup Winner: Brazil, Spain, Argentina?
July 1, 2010 - 5:56 AM | by: Greg BurkeIn case you haven’t noticed, the biggest sporting event in the world is taking place right now. Not everyone does notice; someone commented here a few weeks ago that he thought only girls played soccer. Maybe in his neighborhood.
Now that it’s down to just eight teams, the question is, who will win the World Cup on July 11?
It won’t be Italy, which made an early and embarrassing exit. But Italy’s biggest sports daily, La Gazzetta dello Sport, interviewed some 50 experts, and with that highly unscientific poll predicts today that Brazil will win it all, beating Spain in the final. Brazil has won the cup five times; Spain never.
It’s unclear whether that record gives the advantage to Brazil, with all of its experience, or to Spain, which should be a lot hungrier for the win.
Gazzetta dello Sport is a prestigious paper, but it’s not infallible. It also happens to be printed on pink paper, a funny color for a publication read almost entirely by men.
Brazil is certainly strong, and like Spain, a complete team. But watch out for Argentina, Germany and the Netherlands.
The field will be narrowed down by this weekend; the Netherlands and Brazil play on Friday; and Argentina faces off against Germany on Saturday.
