Middle East
4 Years in Captivity
June 25, 2010 - 2:10 AM | by: Yonat Friling
Four years ago today, the Israeli soldier, Gilad Shalit was abducted by Hamas, and taken to the Gaza Strip. Today, his family is going on a march to Jerusalem, in what seems the last push (or a Hail Mary) for his release. Thousands of Israelis will join them on the way to the Prime Minister office in Jerusalem. The goal is to pressure Netanyahu to take the necessary decision for his release. A deal will force Israel to release 1000 Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli prisons, some are Israel’s Worst enemies.
Noam Shalit, Gilad”s father tells Fox News, “ We will not come back home without our son”.
Last December it seemed that the deal is close, but then the Israeli forum of seven, the inner cabinet of PM Netanyahu, rejected the German Mediator’s proposal, and added some new conditions. Hamas, on the other hand, didn’t respond to these demands, and since then, there was no development.
“After four years, the time has come to make up one’s mind, especially since the government is not proposing any other alternative and there are no negotiations right now and no response from Hamas to the German proposal.” Said Shalit. “The Prime Minister knows why he was elected and that he has to make decisions that are difficult and unpopular.”
The call for his release will be heard in other cities around the globe, such as Zurich, New York, Paris and others.
In Rome, the mayor has put up a big poster on the municipality building, and vowed to keep it up until Gilad’s release.
Shalit’s family and friends, as well as many in Israeli public, hope that this last effort, will lead to a success, and he will be able celebrate his 24th birthday on August 28th as a free man.
