Man Detained Outside G20 Summit

June 24, 2010 - 2:51 PM | by: Mike Tobin

Police with the Integrated Security Unit guarding the G20 summit in Toronto say they have detained a 53-year-old man with hazardous materials in his car and an array of weapons.

The hazardous materials are defined as 5 containers of gasoline. Police say the crude weapons range from a cross bow to a pellet gun and a baseball bat.

Canadian police charged Gary McCullough with weapons dangerous. He will be in court Friday.

An officer noticed he was driving with a suspicious container tied to the top of his vehicle and it looked like it might fall. When the man was pulled over the car was searched and he said things that made them decide to arrest him. Police say it is too early to charge him or connect his circumstance to the G20 summit. But a police source says given the time and proximity that is a reasonable conclusion to draw. Police say the suspect appeared to be living out of his car.

There is a second case that police have already connected to the G20. That involves a common law husband and wife living in the Toronto suburb, Forest Hill.

Canadian authorities searched their home then arrested Brian Sonne on June 22. Kristen Peterson was arrested on the 23rd. They are both facing charges related to possessing explosives.

Police would not confirm reports that Sonne had earlier told a group of activists he intended to buy suspicious materials ahead of the summit with the goal of distracting police.
