In FL:Money+Anti-establishment=A Dem Battle
June 24, 2010 - 6:11 PM | by: Carl CameronMIAMI, FL – The Democratic nomination for Florida’s U.S. Senate seemed all but wrapped up for Rep. Kendrick Meek, until out of nowhere, billionaire Florida real estate investor Jeff Greene got in the game. With little campaign activity, beyond several million dollars in ads, Greene has risen in the polls to compete with the four-term Congressman from Miami.
Greene has never held elected office, though he ran for congress in California as a Republican. He toyed with running as an Independent before Senate candidate Governor Christ left the Republican party earlier this year to run as an Independent. Meek is the favored candidate of the establishment, yet virtually unknown statewide and not coming up with the competitive cash.
Meek and Greene are currently in a statistical tie, with the largest percentage of voters still undecided. Florida primary voters go to the polls August 24th, with the victor in the Democratic race facing the presumptive Republican nominee Marco Rubio and Governor Charlie Crist, running as an Independent.
