Violence Said To Cost Billions
June 23, 2010 - 5:08 PM | by: Robert LeeCHICAGO- Illinois State Representative John Fritchey, who has called on the state to bring in the National Guard to help curb the violence on Chicago streets, today said the toll on the community is greater then the loss of 209 victims killed so far this year.
“This is a city wide issue, it effects all of us, it effects our pocket books, it effects the economic viability of this city”, said Fritchey speaking at a press conference.
Taking into account unpaid medical bills, incarcerations, declining property values in crime ridden neighborhoods and loss of business revenue in those neighborhoods, Fritchey says each shooting costs about a million dollars or roughly $2500.00 per taxpayer.
Getting the numbers from The University Of Chicago: Crime Lab study at http://crimelab.uchicago.edu/ Fritchey went on to stress the need for more law enforcement and not to leave any options off the table including The National Guard or decriminalizing Marijuana.
