Lance’s Tour De France: Is 38 A Big Deal?

June 22, 2010 - 10:48 AM | by: Greg Burke

Lance Armstrong, the seven-time Tour de France winner, will be trying for one more victory in the prestigious race when the Tour begins next week.

Any chance for Lance? Probably not, although his age, 38, has started an interesting debate, after Outside magazine’s most recent issue ran a controversial cover of the cyclist.

Outside photo-shopped a picture of Lance wearing a T-shirt reading: “38. BFD.” The number, of course, is his age. BFD is Big Deal, with an adjective thrown in the middle.

Lance was not amused, and quickly twitted that the cover was “lame s**t.”  Outside notes in its defense that you have to read the small print on the cover, and you see this: “Note: Not Armstrong’s real T-shirt.”

BFD, said the editors of Outside. “We wanted to create a provocative image and make a bold statement about the fact that, because of Armstrong’s age, many cycling fans are skeptical of his chances in this year’s Tour de France,” they wrote.

If Lance did win the Tour de France at 38, that actually would be a big deal. The favorite is Spaniard Alberto Contador. He’s 27.
