Times Square Bomber Terror Connection

June 18, 2010 - 12:15 PM | by: David Lee Miller

According to a government indictment Times Square bombing suspect Faisal Shahzad received training and funding from Tehrik e Taliban, an umbrella group for the Pakistani Taliban.

Soon after the failed bombing on May 1, 2010, many authorities believed the attack was the work of a “lone wolf” and all but dismissed a claim of responsibility by the group. As the investigation progressed and Shahzad cooperated with investigators law enforcement began to change course. On Thursday US Attorney General Eric Holder said, “facts alleged in this indictment show the Pakistani Taliban facilitated Shahzad’s failed attack on US soil.”

Count two of the indictment said “Shahzad received explosives training in Waziristan, Pakistan from explosives trainers affiliated with Tehrik e Taliban.” The indictment also provides more information about how the plot was funded.

According to the indictment Shahzad received approximately $5,000 in cash in Massachusetts from an unindicted co-conspirator who “Shahzad understood worked for Tehrik- e –Taliban.” In April Shahzad allegedly received another $7,000.00 in Ronkonkoma, New York that was sent at the “direction” of the same individual.

The ten count indictment charged Shahzad with attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction, an attempted act of terrorism transcending national boundaries, transportation of explosive and other offenses. On Monday Shahzad is scheduled to appear in Federal Court for an arraignment. If convicted of the more serious charges he faces the possibility of life in prison without possibility of parole.
