Blago Trial: Follow The Moving Money

June 16, 2010 - 2:37 PM | by: Ruth Ravve

How much money was involved and where did it all go?  That was the focus of testimony this morning, at Rod Blagojevich’s corruption trial.

Joseph Aramanda was back on the stand, to talk about financial dealings with convicted fundraiser Tony Rezko.  Aramanda testified that he was shocked by an offer from Rezko to be paid just $250,000 salary for a business plan that he thought had the possiblity to net millions.  Aramanda claims Rezko told him the reason for the lower amount is because the money would actually be split by several people, including the former Governor.

On cross examination, the defense posted on the courtroom’s big white screen (setup to show evidence, like checks and contracts, to the jury) a contract which involved Aramanda having to borrow hundreds of thousands of dollars (but not having to show any collateral to get it).   Once the money was received,  Aramanda testified, Rezko gave him a list of associates to wire the money to, on Rezko’s behalf.  ”Did he tell you the money was being used to get him kickbacks…that he was using you as a frontman?” the defense attorney asked.  ”No he didn’t” Aramanda replied.  (Blago had a slight smirk on his face at this point).

Aramanda admitted he was asked about, and considering a cabinet position in the Blagojevich administration, in the department of aging.  ”Were you told you had to give the governor $50,000 in order to get this position?”  the defense asked.  ”No I wasn’t” Aramanda said.   Aramanda says ultimately he wasn’t interested in the position.
