Serving the Sweet Land of Liberty

May 31, 2010 - 2:08 PM | by: Adam Housley

Just feet from where films open to red carpet fanfare and a massive freeway splits the hills, lies the Los Angeles National Cemetery. Thousands pass each day, few likely realizing what lies beneath. One of the 146 designated “United States National Cemetery” in our country, this one and many others like it, get little fanfare, or notice. Arlington just outside of D.C. is the most recognized, for obvious reasons, but so many others serve as an important final resting place for those who ensure us this amazing opportunity to live in freedom.

I often pass here as see the white stones in perfect order, with random flowers and flags sprouting from the emerald grass and think of how lucky we all really are to live in this beautiful place. Our job here at Fox News sends us across the globe and we get the amazing opportunity to see men and women like these, who will one day be buried here and at other National Cemeteries, do amazing work to help so many. While we battle the war on terror, it cannot be forgotten that so many serve in so many places and some will end up here much too young. Whether in Iraq, Afghanistan, Haiti or all the places in between, our servicemen and women are honored on this day by remembering those who have gone before. I know my grandfathers who served in the Army and Navy were proud of this day and as we barbecue and spend time with family and friends…let us not forget.

Whether hanging a flag on your front porch, stopping at a cemetery to help plant a flag or say a prayer…whatever you do today, find a moment. We have this day, first honored after the Civil War, because of those who have fought for us and given their lives in service. I am thankful.

Here are some of my favorite pictures I have taken here at the Los Angeles National Cemetery and as our men and women do the tough work away from home and around the globe.

UPDATE
I just came from the cemetery here in Los Angeles. As I entered, I notice a family with a tent, having their Memorial Day with a loved one since passed. I thought of taking a picture of this sight that gave me chills, or even a quick hello…I decided to leave them in peace. As I moved around this beautiful, serene place I was heartened to see hundreds of cars and every spot filled as a special Memorial Day service continued in the distance and cannons fired rounds of remembrance…people did not forget.
