Blair Talks, But Not About Resignation

May 21, 2010 - 3:32 PM | by: Jake Gibson

McLean, Va (FOX) – Recently resigned Director of National Intelligence Admiral Dennis Blair did not bring his job departure  in a speech at the Association of Former Intelligence Officers luncheon.

The speech was Blair’s first public sighting since he announced his intent to resign Thursday night, following pressure from President Obama, who asked Blair to leave.   His resignation becomes official next Friday, May 28.

The speech was closed to the press and Blair did not speak to reporters who shouted questions as he walked in and out of the luncheon hall.

However attendees tell Fox News Blair didn’t speak at all about stepping down as DNI during the speech, and he wasn’t asked about it during the question and answers session.

“He could not have got a warmer reception,” said a former CIA employee who preferred to remain anonymous, “I mean… he’s one of us.”

Those who were inside said Blair’s speech centered around intelligence issues, specifically the office of the Director of National Intelligence.

When asked if he thought Blair got a raw deal, the former CIA man said, “The expectations of politicians and the press don’t always line up with the realities of intelligence work.”

And what about who might fill the post next?

“We’ve heard the speculation about possible candidates to takeover as DNI, but honestly, who would want that job?,” said the former CIA employee.

“You have a ton of responsibility and no real authority.”‘
