Top Hat Approaches Oil Leak
May 12, 2010 - 8:16 PM | by: Serafin GomezEMPIRE, LA- The Oil Containment Dome, known as the ” Top Hat” –the latest plan by BP to stop the large oil flow into the Gulf of Mexico— has been lowered towards the leak that has generated the massive slick, and should be in place by the end of the week, according to BP executives.
The chamber is the second one built after a larger dome failed when ice-like crystals unexpectedly formed, and generated a slush substance that clogged it. The smaller ” Top Hat” dome, like it’s predecessor, is designed to siphon, and control the river of oil gushing from the sea bed. It will also pump down hot water, and methanol to ward off ice. BP engineers hope that pumping down these elements, plus its smaller size will prevent it from creating the hydrates that created the slush-like substance and prevented their initial plan from working.
