U.S.
UVA Lacrosse Player Laid to Rest
May 8, 2010 - 8:16 PM | by: Sarah CourtneyBALTIMORE — Hundreds of mourners Saturday paid tribute to the life and memory of Yeardley Love, the 22 year old University of Virginia lacrosse player found beaten to death in her off-campus apartment early Monday morning. At least two busloads of Love’s UVA classmates and lacrosse teammates arrived in Baltimore for the funeral mass. Love’s immediate family arrived at the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen just before ten a.m. with ten pallbearers carrying the flower-draped coffin.
The program for Love’s funeral service included a personal essay Love wrote her freshman year in high school in which she expressed her goals and ambition: “After college, I hope to attend Virginia Law School for three years; and after that, I wish to have a family and become a lawyer. If I had to wish for three things in my life, they would be to go to University of Virginia for college, have a happy and healthy family when I grow up, and to always keep in touch and stay close with my family.”
The service lasted more than an hour and half. Love’s family and UVA lacrosse coach shared their reflections on the college senior’s life. Upon exiting the church, friends and family consoled one another as the girls lacrosse team walked arm in arm. The college senior was laid to rest privately in nearby Towsen, Maryland. Love was set to graduate from UVA in several weeks.
