Ice Cooler Terror
May 7, 2010 - 11:57 PM | by: David Lee MillerEven though accused Times Square bomber Faisal Shahzad is in custody, he continues to terrorize.
A week ago, an abandoned cooler in Times Square wouldn’t even get the attention of the Sanitation Department. On Friday, its discovery brought dozens of cops, firemen and emergency crews to the scene.
Times Square, the crossroads of the world was shut down for the second time in less than a week. Turns out some litterbug paralyzed the heart of New York City.
In the past week, there have been other false alarms. A major bridge was shut down after a truck was spotted sitting idle without a driver. An Emirates airplane returned to the gate because a name showed up on the no-fly list. And a manhole fire lead to fear of a possible bomb.
The Wall Street Journal says suspicious package calls to 911 are up about a third since the Times Square bomber attempted to incinerate tourists and native New Yorkers. The citywide campaign advising people “if they see something, say something,” has taken on new importance.
If convicted of the failed car bombing, Shahzad faces life in prison. How long will it take before an unclaimed ice cooler no longer spreads fear among New Yorkers?
