Oil Spill: Braving the Storm

April 30, 2010 - 3:08 PM | by: Craig Boswell

Families and business owners at Cypress Cove Marina are in maximum overdrive refusing to be defeated. An attitude being displayed across the Venice, Louisiana area. They are working round the clock loading, hauling and placing shoreline boom in an effort to save or at least salvage fishing grounds and wildlife habitat.

But the odds seemed to be stacked against them, particlularly the weather. High winds are whipping up waves carrying crude oil over the booms. Now that the light sheen of oil is already making landfall in some areas it’s a good bet that the thicker oil just a few miles behind will also begin to seep into the marshes and onto the shore.

That being said, this is a community that has faced tough odds before and many are determined to brave this storm too.
During the 14 or so hours we stood along the bank of Tiger Pass, watching the boats roll in and roll out carrying equipment to the gulf and the mouth of the Mississippi, almost everyone would take the time to wave or say hello…acknowledging we all have a stake in the outcome.
