The Search Continues at Hotel Montana

We had a brief trip to the Hotel Montana site today.  Of all the recovery efforts I've seen so far, this is the most productive and well organized. There was a constant flow of trucks carrying out rubble that has been sifted through and then sent off to a landfill about six miles away. Also on site was Bil Hawkins, the Incident Commander of the Hotel Montana Recovery Mission for the US Army Corp of Engineers. ... read more

Looters Pillage Dead Archbishops House

We happened to be in the Bel Air neighborhood taking in the first mass since the earthquake at Our Lady of the Assumption. About 300 parishoners showed up to pray, sing hymns and look for hope in the devastation. Meanwhile, a gang in one of the roughest neighborhoods in Port Au Prince was just looking to survive. Hours after hundreds gathered for an outdoor mass at the ... read more

Heavy Smoke Clogs Haitian Sky at Dusk

For the past few nights, at dusk, a film, a haze of fog fills the air stifling the lungs and irritating the eyes.  From our vantage point at the Fox Haiti bureau, you can see the skyline is covered in a layer of gray, obscuring the view of the majestic coastline.  The choking smoke has become a necessity to prevent disease. Garbage and debris has piled up in the ... read more

A Country on the Mend

Today was just our second day in Haiti and we're not seeing people in utter shock, but a people beginning to rebuild their country or at least just sustain themselves. From everyone I've spoken to here on the ground who have been in Haiti since the earthquake last week, they all say today was the first time they have seen people going about their daily lives, selling ... read more

Haiti Victims Frozen in Time

Some of the victims of the Haiti earthquake were frozen in time when the earthquake struck, much like when Italy's Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD, entombing the the people of Pompeii in ash. Rescue workers from DRC Emergency services, an American company, have been hired to find victims at the 3 Unibank branches in Port-au-Prince. They tell us they found the body of a ... read more

Haitian Voodoo: Leave the Loa Alone

In times of trouble, many turn to faith. But that's not necessarily the case with Haitians who practice voodoo. They're leaving the loa alone. We were offered a rare glimpse inside a Haitian Voodoo temple today. I expected the voodoo priest we met to tell us how he is helping people find solace after the deadly earthquake that struck 11 days ago. Instead he told us ... read more

Signs of Former Life Lining the Streets

Saturday January 23, 9 a.m. -- Our driver's name is Biondi, a large Haitian man with kids and a wife. He knows enough English to get us back and forth. He takes us in his Toyota mini van, zooming around packs of slow moving people. a man on a mission to get us to our morning "liveshot" location in time. We've labeled his transport "the hell van," because riding with ... read more

In Haiti, First Contact is Key to Survival

Here at the airport in Port Au Prince, the University has officially opened the doors on it's makeshift hospital. The hospital has been running full steam for days, but today marks the grand opening with a giant banner that stands almost two stories tall.
