CDC: Time for Seniors to Get H1N1 Vaccine
January 8, 2010 - 10:00 AM | by: Jonathan SerrieIt’s too early to tell whether an uptick in H1N1 activity during the week following Christmas will continue, according to experts with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. But federal health officials are urging Americans to remain vigilant and take advantage of a new abundance of vaccine.
“I think complacency is probably our top enemy right now,” said Rear Adm. Anne Schuchat, MD, director of the CDC’s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases.
With 136 million doses of H1N1 vaccine now available to state governments for ordering, Schuchat said there should be ample supply to accommodate the general public — not just persons in high risk groups, such as children.
“We think it’s the time now for seniors who wanted to be vaccinated, but have stepped aside so younger, higher risk people could be vaccinated,” said Schuchat. “This is your time too to come get the vaccine.”
