Job Hunt: Interviewing on the Web

December 22, 2009 - 11:04 AM | by: Courtney Friel

Believe it or not, the Web is actually one of the hottest places to attend a job interview – that’s right, an interview.

There’s a huge increase in “video interviewing” –  everyone from actors auditioning for roles to students applying to college. Employers and job seekers are using free applications like Skype, i-chat, Tokbox and Google chat.

The reason – it’s cheaper, faster and more personal. All you need is a computer and a Web cam.  It’s better than a telephone call – it’s face to face, and companies can weed out the candidates they don’t have chemistry with and just fly out their short list for a follow-up.

After all – the cost of airfare, hotel, and per diem can add up.  Last year, the online shoe company Zappos brought 60 people to Las Vegas for interviews, each candidate cost them around $1,000 in expenses.  This year Zappos switched to conducting video interviews over Skype-  making three recent hires this way.

Not only can video interviewing save companies money- but also the job seeker’s travel time.  If someone is looking for a job they can call the employer and suggest a video interview.  This might be an advantage over others who have only submitted paper resumes.  You’ll be able to fit in back to back interviews from your living room.

Some tips to keep in mind however – make sure you dress professionally (no pajamas). Be personable.  Make proper eye contact and don’t look distracted. Close all the other programs on the screen so no pop-ups get in the way.  Watch your background.  Steer clear of loud roommates or the dog barking, and don’t sit in front of dirty dishes or a refrigerator full of tacky magnets.
