On The Job Hunt: U.S. Census Jobs
December 18, 2009 - 1:24 PM | by: Kelly BurkeThe U.S. Census Bureau is taking applications to hire more than a million temporary workers in the Spring. Though the jobs will be short term the hiring push could not come at a better time for the record number of Americans who are currently out of work.
Back in 2000 the Bureau had trouble getting enough people to apply. This year is different according to Denver Region Deputy Director Vicky Mcintire, “We’re having a bit of an easier time getting people to come out and apply for our jobs because of the unemployment rate.”
The U.S. Constitution mandates that a national census be taken every 10 years. The Census Bureau will mail out millions of questionnaires for residents to fill out and return by April, 21. Where questionnaires are not returned, census takers will hit the streets to do the questioning in person. These “Enumerators” as the Census Bureau calls them, will work for up to 10 weeks at wages ranging from $12 to $25 an hour, depending on location.
The jobs will not only be a welcome economic boost to the unemployed, but could result in big money for the communities they live in. Census results are not only used to determine how many members of Congress each state is allowed in the U.S. House of Representatives, it is also used to figure out how to allocate more than $400-Billion in federal funding. For individual communities that means money for roads, healthcare, senior care, schools and much, much more.
Those wishing to apply for Census jobs are encouraged to call 1-866-861-2010 to find out where to go in their area to apply. You can also get information on working for the Census at www.2010censusjobs.gov, but applications must be made in person at your local Census office.
