EXCLUSIVE – Deal Nearly Complete

November 27, 2009 - 9:16 AM | by: Reena Ninan

Sources close to officials negotiating for the release of kidnapped Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit tell Fox News that a deal to secure his freedom will likely be concluded next week, when Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu returns from a trip to Germany.

A major remaining sticking point is disagreement over where to deport Palestinian prisoners from East Jerusalem.

Egyptian sources say that Hamas still needs to come back to Israel with answers on a handful of issues. But an official response is not expected until after the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha (Feast of the Sacrifice), which begins Friday and ends Monday.

Still, the latest developments indicate that the two sides have narrowed their differences.

"What we are seeing now is the end game," said one source close to the negotiations, who asked not to be named because he is not authorized to speak on the record.

Both sides, however, also expressed caution that a final agreement is very close, but has not yet been agreed upon.

I am not entirely sure what's exclusive about this story? I have been following for this story for years and to have your reporter label it exclusive i think is very misleading - I was very disappointed to find out there was actually nothing new that your own network has reported before, or has been covered by other media. If you people can't be honest with these details, it leads me to question everything else you report .. or at the very least what ever this reporter says. Please Fox, just the facts not the hype.

Bert - You make the same mistake that the Bush administration did when invading Afghanistan. You assume that just because the opponent doesn't follow the rules, that a High Contracting Party doesn't have to either. You also make the mistake that the rules are quaint and outdated. The US Supreme Court ruled that at least for the US, the treaties still apply and our Constitution still has force and effect. What specifically about Captain R was distorted? Have you read the tape transcripts?

Mark- If "The government of Gaza is not a High Contracting Party to the Geneva Conventions", and is not voluntarily observing the conventions, then neither does any country that is opposing them have to observe the conventions. And the circumstances that you have posted regarding "Captain R' is a vile distortion of the facts.

Michela, I personally dont think you have the ability to really "think" You have no concept of the History and suffering of the Jewish People. But with all their suffering they still shine through as a most remarkable race who has ( as still does) give the human world culture, the arts, medicine, high technology, etc . But their greatest asset is compassion . So, perhaps your first lesson is to visit a Holocust Museum to witness REAL suffering !!!

Believing is next to impossible. Neither government recognizes the other and Hamas capture of Shalit was just as "legal" as any Israeli capture inside Gaza. The government of Gaza is as recognized by Israel as is the government of Israel by the Gazan government. The government of Gaza is not a High Contracting Party to the Geneva Conventions. Neither side has an exclusive on legality or morality or ethics. Whatever happens, the Israeli known as Captain R will still be walking free and treated as a hero in Israel. Killing 13 year old girls, after verifying they are unarmed and wounded and no threat is apparently heroic in the Israeli Army.

Just so you all know, I've been there. And what you see and hear from the media is not like what it really is over there. The media blows everything out of proportion. And by the way, Sgt. Gilad Shalit is being held illegally by Hamas against the Geneva Convention by not letting an NGO see to his care, for example refusing the Red Cross from seeing him and just seeing to his basic needs.

Bret, That is the Middle East people nature for the last 1500 years, since the spread of Islam. live on somebody's else effort, steal, rob, kill, force and all/any means. They have learned not to create, develope and use their brains, their resources and their population.

To the Haters - If there are children starving, they should ask their fellow Palestinians why they burned down the Jewish hothouses when Israel left Gaza. Ask why they are not producing tons of fruits and vegetables as they were under the Israelis. The worst enemies of the Palestinians are themselves in their demented hatred for Israel. They destroy hothouses and build rockets. Just yesterday 5 mortar shells were fired from Gaza. Sick, sick, sick.

Hey Trev. You do not have an Arabic name so i will guess you are American or British. what do you really know about the seizure of homes and land by Israel other than what you read in the paper. Where is your balance. what about the death squads of Palestinians that roam through Gaza killing any Palestinian who works for a Jew, one documented murder was because a man got a call on his cell phone from his Jewish employer to tell him his job was still there if he wanted it. it is considered high treason by the Palestinian leaders to work for Jews or even talk with them. is this rational. their leaders are the ones who are imposing mindless poverty on the people of Gaza. they don't need any help from the Israelis. The Israeli used to employ over 2 million Arabs who are now mostly living in useless poverty imposed on them by Hamas and the PA.One side Israel has a country and is willing to settle on terms that respect their prexisting borders. the other side has no country and wants it all on their terms or not at all. which is the rational viewpoint. which is the merciful one. it is Hamas and the PA that has condemned millions to live in hell, not the jews. WAKE UP!

people need a strong dose of reality. sure peace would be nice but does any rational person think Israel will ever give up part of Jerusalem. When negotiations are built around false ideas they are nothing but lies. When will any of our "world leaders" stop and listen to what Israel has been saying since day1. "Jerusalem is not on the table" ao unless the world powers are prepared to conquer Israel themselves to settle this maybe its time to have some reasonable and realistic goals for the Israeli - Palestinian peace plan. like a sepearte area for Palestinian homeland with a solid no go zone permenantly patrolled by a world peace keeping force for the foreseeable future. The jews are not going to suddenly get up and go somewhere else and they already have a country. If the Palestinians continue to insist that they will only accept a country on land already lived on by jews, then they will never get a country. So do they want a cause or a homeland. its time for the Palestinians to decide. they were offered a homeland before in jordan many years ago and the plo responded with death threats against King Hussein. It seems the Palestinian leaders do prefer their endless war over a homeland. i guess it will never end. i do know i would prefer a country somewhere in the region to a endless war but hey what do i know. They jews asked for a country after WW2 and it was the world powers that set the borders. maybe the Palestinian leaders should stop demanding and accept what the world is willing to do for them before the entire middle east becomes a field of melted glass from a nuclear war.

The Palestinians did have their own buildings. Then the Jews took them all away, along with their farms and villages. Then they forced the Palestinians into a small area. Now the Jews are building houses their too. They are taking their water and denying them the ability to prosper. What would you do?

Lady who reads.

Read Joan Peters book "From Time Immorial" It tells you with documentation who the Palestinians are. Why they are there and how the Israeli's rescued them from the Jordanians, among other things.
