Where to Give: Charity Donations Down

November 24, 2009 - 10:55 AM | by: Ruth Ravve

At the Greater Chicago Food Depository, trucks are arriving loaded with food for delivery.  The enormous warehouse shelves are packed with things like rice, flour and canned goods.  The Depository provides food for over 600 different food pantries, typically feeding about 500,000 needy people a year.

But Depository director Kate Maehr is worried.  This year, with the economy suffering, donations are down, yet the need is greater.  As people lose their jobs, they worry about day-to-day living, so money for charity is often dropped from their budget.

That problem is compounded by the fact that there are more mouths to feed, with people who were once donors now seeking help from food banks for basic necessities.  Darren Mullin, who was laid off as a contractor last year, says he never thought he'd be going to a food pantry to feed his family, but, he says, he had no choice.  He's one of dozens lining up at places like Catholic Charities Casa Catalina, where Thanksgiving bags, filled with a turkey, a ham and all the trimmings, are being handed out by the dozens, to people who say if it weren't for the charity, the table would be bare.

Many seeking help say they've never needed charity in the past.  "It's about 23-percent over last year at this time, and when we look back over 2 years, it's close to a 70-percent increase in the number of people needing food" says Maehr

The holiday season is a crucial time of year for charities, as they take in about 40% of their yearly budget. Salvation Army lieutenant colonel David Grindle says they've already seen a drop of about 14% this year, and they worry that number will increase.

"Every unit across the United States is looking at every avenue to increase giving because they're actually lining up at our doors," Grindle told Fox News.

Charity leaders hope that making the public aware of their plight will actually increase donations.  "In past financial downturns, actually Salvation Army income increased significantly because people knew that if they were struggling that the people at the low end of the economic ladder were in more difficult financial straits" says Grindle.  With so many charities in need, many who have spare change this year are wondering where to give.

One website, charitynavigator.org, has information for researching donation sites.

Wow, this thread sure backfired. A typical holiday article about needing money for charity. And 90% of the responses are "F you, where is the money for my family" Way to go Obama, you have ruined a country's faith in itself in 11 short months. Lets hope you're out before we have to endure another 11 months.

I will no longer donate to any charity as long as I'm the target for ever increasing taxes. I have to protect my own family now from the onslaught of an out of control anti-american gov't.

Sorry, but as I wrote to my Senator, Sherrod Brown, with ObamaCare in the works, I have to save to care for my own family. So no donations to the food banks, Red Cross, Salvation Army, etc from me anymore, for it's obvious that with current government policies I will need every dime that the government deems to allow me to keep. And with Louisiana Senator Landrieu showing that she can be bought I truly regret the voluntary donations that I sent to Hurricane Katrina victims. Except the dogs. I don't regret the money I sent to save the animals that the Hurricane Katrina people left to die.

Maybe they want to do in Chicago what they have been caught doing in Charlotte. We give for them to give to the poor and they are keeping the money and articles donated for themeselves or friends.

America has the the richest "poor" people in the history of the world because of our historic protection of individual liberty. But that is changing: the progressives are rapidly destroying our liberties and replacing them with egalitarianism as the state-sponsored religion. Thus: The government is asserting itself as the moral authority over mankind, trampling the Constitution under their feet in the process. I do realize that there are some folks that are really hurting out there, but I'm stretched thinner and thinner by those who feel entitled to use government power to steal from my paycheck in order to support their lifestyles and broken cultures. The natural end of government-enforced egalitarianism is the impoverishment of all except the privileged elite. Welcome to the progressive's utopia of 1984. By a large margin, it was the greedy dependent classes who voted Obamao into office: those who are already on the government dole and who love to hear somebody promise them more for nothing. Sorry, but you are all going to reap what you've sown. You voted to take from others: now what you had will be taken from you. It is only just.

Donations are down because now the U.S government is the great provider to the poor. I will give less if Obamacare passes. Why should people give when the government already provides food (food bands, food stamps, free breakfast and lunch at schools, shelter(section 8 housing) and now health care(medicaid). My taxes already go to pay for birth control. Now people still can't figure it out and I will be soon paying for their abortions.

The middle class and the wealthy are shrinking in America, don't you get the idea, poor don't help poor and for every dollar that is taken in tax only 10 cents will make it to the poor the rest will end up in some rich politicians bank account. Sorry you wanted a socialistic nation and you're reaping your vote and it will get one hell of a lot worse in the near future. I didn't vote for him but I too am feeling the pain so for you that voted for the socialist, you got want you wanted how is that changey thing feeling lately.

The democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not. -Thomas Jefferson The middle class will take years to recover from the Change they Voted for. In spite of the massive loss of our savings and our childrens future, the people in the middle will still give to their food pantry.

I live in a suburb of Chicago, times are hard for my family also but have always given during the Holiday Season and will continue to do so this year. At our Church we usually have a "Bethel Tree" on it are fist names of children and the sizes they need. have done this for years and always purchased a toy for the child along with needed clothing. This year our church is not doing the " Bethel Tree" the Agency we deal with stated we need to give "gift cards" per the families request. Now I have a few problems with this... the child will not have gifts to open specfically for them. Also how do we know that the money will be spent on the child? Since when is giving during the hoilday season dictated on what to give? Shouldn't people less fortunate be happy that they are recieving?

Don't you just love the severe flaws in logic exhibited by the Chicago political machine which has taken over our government? Who would have ever thought that their war against the upper & middle class would have resulted in decreased charitable donations & fewer jobs? Maybe the same government who couldn't even run a brothel (Mustang Ranch) profitably can provide us with a solution...

Michelle the reason for obesity among the poor is not necessarily because they eat too much but rather the types of foods that they can afford to eat. Foods that are most affordable are foods that are the highest in calories, sugar, and carbohydrates (breads and pasta - macaroni and cheese)Next time maybe you should educate yourself before publicly displaying your ignorance. Happy Thanksgiving
