Southbound Busts

On the California-Mexico border in San Ysidro, the drug cartels are being squeezed and U.S. agents couldn't be happier. We first featured the plan to crackdown on the cartel runners about 8 months ago, now as the first numbers are released by the Department of Homeland Security, we will be the first to report and the only on the border since we were tipped off about the impressive seizures by our agents.

Here are some of the highlights...seizures of unreported currency departing the country grew 108 percent to $1,460,602. That's cash being sent directly back to the cartels to help fund their brutal war south of the border...and that money total comes from just here in the San Diego sector. Nationwide, more than 57 million dollars was seized, a 74 percent increase in cash grabbed by our agents from the cartels.

Northbound CPB seized almost 145 tons of illegal narcotics and apprehended more than 42,000 immigration violators during federal fiscal year 2009. In California, where we sit atop a mountain overlooking the busiest port of entry in the world, the total amount of narcotics seized during the year at California’s six ports of entry with Mexico increased 20 percent compared to the previous period. Marijuana seizures increased 21 percent to 277,542 pounds; cocaine seizures decreased 13 percent to 7,906 pounds; heroin seizures increased 51 percent to 619 pounds; and methamphetamine confiscations increased 82 percent to 3,693 pounds.

As you can see just by the numbers, agents here on the U.S. side are making an impressive dent. They are not sure if it is the cartels sending more stuff north and south, or if it's more of a "balloon effect." That's the analogy when you squeeze both ends of a balloon in bulges in the middle. In any case, more boots on the ground, better training and new technology is really giving our men and women the upper hand in enforcement. Both inbound and outbound numbers are up big time and much of it also has to do with increased enforcement in more rural areas along the border.

I have come here to the Tijuana area since I was a kid and as a correspondent for Fox over the course of the last 8 years. To call the change dramatic would be an understatement. As a kid, it was all about a quick and fun trip to grab food and souvenirs. Then as the cartels became more powerful, the area was overrun. Now massive fences line the border with a road in between and the famous 'Smugglers Gulch' has been filled. Cameras sit atop poles and more agents are on the ground. As agents make some great progress in both direction busts, another change is coming....a massive multi million dollar renovation of the San Ysidro port of entry, which will add some much needed infrastructure to the southbound lanes.

Why would you want to make drugs legal, so the whole country becomes dopers and we think it is good to do drugs?? We can use the money to help assist our debt, unless our widely renouned government keeps spending and spending?? guessing your a fan of funding the lazy and penalizing the ones who work??? WOW

The solution is easy. Mine the border a mile wide outside of controlled border crossings. It would be much cheaper than a fence and much more effective.

I don't think anybody here understands the the situation. The reason for the south bound operations is to prevent money and weapons as payments to the cartels after smuggling their drugs north. As far as the illegal aliens, as long as they feel their chances for survival are better here, they will continue to come, and I think that is very difficult to stop. I don't agree with illegal immigration, but for those that are here illegally, you should make every attempt to learn English and assimilate with the American Tradition and way of life. After all that is why you are coming here! My parents at one time were in the US illegally, but worked hard to give us a better life. They are now here legally, and I am a very proud Citizen of the United States of America!

ok...why should we just annex mexico-besides the huge drug problem and drug cartels-there is a lot of corruption all through central america with drug trafficking and here with illegals from everywhere- we're not here to save the world and realistically speaking there is just no way to cutt an end to this problem! Let's just count on the day that God blows up in anger, snaps his finger and says enough is enough. c'mon people does anyone realize that the problem is a spiritual one and that all this exists because we have forgotten about God and replaced Him to be slaves of our own fallible minds and sinful hearts! or would you like to continue "spinning your wheel" and sink into the illusion that we can put out a formula to solve all this.

But... then, what would we do with all those Mexicans...

I agree the USA should annex Mexico. Extend citizenship to all with all the benfeits and obligations (taxes) that accompany it. We can expand our markets, provide jobs to modernize the new territory's infrastructure, replace their corrupt government with our own cronies, improve education, etc. Seems like a win-win situation.....

I did tell DHS I had less than $10,000. They insisted I tell them EXACTLY how much money I had on me. When I questioned them I had three agents swarm my car and demand I tell them. I didn't want to be locked up in a little room and strip searched so I complied and told them. To those who say "How hard is it to comply?" I say how hard is it to not infringe my rights? In all honesty, in today's world, I would rather have some hard working illegal Mexican as neighbors that, and I apologize, some Muslim that I simply can't trust. The Mexican doesn't want to destroy the U.S. The other is really debateable.

I happened upon this article and read every comment. It moved me to voice what is on my mind. How could the United States let 12 million illegal immigrants come across the borders, and start cattering to them. There are a few stores and the employees are all mexicans and are not trying to get someone to translate for you. Being back to my home town after 33 years, with about 85,000 population, but we have a university and jr college. I had a rude awakening when I saw all these tore up neighborhoods, taco trucks, oh, and the food on bikes. On CNN there was a guy who said that it was inhuman to not have the illegal immigrants in the healthcare. When I last checked, all prisoners are filling up these prisons because they did something illegal. Well, why do we cater to them. They feel welcome and walk down the street and aren't even nervous. They come and bring their un-educated mentality with them. They come to get their husle on and live and tear up neighborhoods to looking like the rural places they left from. Kids 12 through 17 make it over here illegally, now remember that they've never went to school, so starting at kindergarten is out. When it's said that there are about 12 million in this country; that's a whole city. I loved the comment from Matt, that made much sense.

Jim. I live in Tijuana and I can assure you that the Mexican Army is very well armed. When they go out on patrol the lead vehicle is a variation of a hummer and it has a .50 caliber machine gun mounted with someone on it all the time. The solders all wear vests and are equipped with fully automatic weapons. The checkpoints that they also man are made up of different contingents of Army, Navy, and Air Force which they rotate from time to time. I have to go thru them every now and then and I can tell you that the solders are courteous, respectful and very thorough. I would much prefer to be stopped by the military than by the police. James: The drug runners are already involved in Kidnappings, armed robberies, extortion, murder for hire and smuggling (not just drugs). I believe Mexico is in the top three “kidnap capitol” in the world but I don’t have the data to prove it. Tonym

this government organization brags on all the money they have seized, what did they do with it? if they are getting all that money from seizures, then they shouldnt get government funded money. Cops are crooks, the number would more then likely be alot higher if the money that the cops rip off first were counted.

Hey HD. I think you need to look at your own comment as to being ignorant. Do you speak of the in-breds from your own family experience?

I know no one who is for the legalization of med mar that wants to see the legalization of any chemicaly made poison out on the streets for any reason. Please stop being ignorant and maybe take a look at the AMA's position on med mar. When you compare med. mar. to dangerous drugs like xanax, pain pills, paxil, and the numerous other drugs that people such as yourself believe are ok because your doctor wrote them you will lose your ignorance

We are too easy on drug personal. If a vehicle has drugs in it shoot the people in the vehicle. If the vehicle has drug money in it shoot the people in the vehicle. If a person is on drugs shoot the people. This will do away with drugs you are taking away the money, users and dealers. If you find out where it is being produce destroy the land.

How do we know these #'s are accurate? How do we know they are not inflated just like the Jobs created /saved #'s issued by this administration? I am skeptical about any #'s that the goverment puts out. Just another case of stoned math.
