Deal to Free Israeli Soldier Advances
November 24, 2009 - 3:46 PM | by: Michael TobinThe ball is back in the court of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in the effort to win the release of the Israeli soldier kidnapped almost 3 and a half years ago.
The world was watching a meeting in Cairo between top representatives of Hamas and the German mediator. Hamas leaders emerged Tuesday evening and boarded a plane for Syria, creating the impression they were going to present the prisoner exchange deal to Hamas politburo Chief Khaled Meshall for final approval.
However, an Egyptian source tells Fox News the final deal does not rest only with Hamas. There are still names of Palestinian prisoners that Netanyahu must green light to be released from Israeli prison to make the deal go through.
Gilad Shalit was kidnapped in a deadly cross border raid that killed 2 of his comrades June 25, 2006. He has been in Hamas captivity ever since. Hamas is demanding a total of 1000 prisoners to be released in exchange for Shalit, 450 of them specifically named.
