EXCLUSIVE Update on Shalit Deal
November 23, 2009 - 1:07 PM | by: Reena NinanEXCLUSIVE: The deal to free kidnapped Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit rests on the location to which the Palestinian prisoners will be deported
Fox News has learned that a deal to bring home Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit now rests in part on whether Israel will agree to release certain Palestinian prisoners and the country to which those prisoners will be deported.
Sources close to the negotiations also add a new reason to be optimistic about progress: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu seems more willing to push a deal forward, even if that means releasing Palestinian prisoners involved in past violent acts.
Hamas officials from Syria traveled to Cairo to meet with a Hamas delegation from Gaza on Monday.
Previously it was believed Hamas would tried to strike a deal by the Muslim holiday, Eid al-Adha (Feast of the Sacrifice) which takes place Friday. But it now looks like a deal may take longer than that--possibly one or two weeks, according to a source close to the negotiations.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is expected to travel to Germany next week. German mediators have been negotiating between Israel and Hamas.
